The place for beautiful books
About usMy name is Kate McCloskey and I run the bookshop with my partner, Linus. My background is in academia, advertising, and the social sector. Whilst my love of books spans a lifetime, I have 15 years’ experience working directly with world literature and books. Opening a bookshop in my home town is the realization of a longstanding dream.
All our stock is hand-picked, ever-changing and carefully curated, everything from philosophy to natural history, manga to the best of new fiction. We have dedicated section for children and young people, and feature books and maps relating to Dartmoor and our local area. Browsers are totally welcome. Or we’re on hand if needed to advise, track down that long-lost book or recommend the perfect read for you. Anything in print that we don’t stock can usually be ordered for next day delivery or collection. |
EventsDogberry & Finch offers seating space for up to 30 people and we have an on-going, full programme of art, community and literature events. We’re really excited about the opportunity to work with schools and local organisations to boost literacy and enjoyment of books amongst local children, as well as creating a social hub for all things art and literature in the heart of Okehampton. We welcome input and collaboration with other local retailers, groups, agencies and organisations in promoting the written word, and the benefits of art and reading.
If you any thoughts about future author signings, local interest groups, competitions, talks, workshops, children’s activities... do come in for a chat, or email using the Get in Touch button below. We’d love to hear your ideas. |
Local artistsTo hold a book in your hands and read is a sensory experience. A book is an aesthetic work of art in its own right (in cover design, form and illustrations) as well as an example of fictional or literary artistry. Those books we read as children stay in our heads as images as well as stories. With image and text so intertwined in the reading experience it seems natural to also stock classic book illustration prints for children and adults.
Above the bookshelves, Dogberry & Finch also showcases and sells paintings by some of the region’s most talented artists. The first display was work by fine artist Danny Holmes-Adams. Our current display is by talented pastel artist Rebecca de Menonca, and local artist Judith Magowan will feature from 14th December. |
